County Profile

Russell County is located in south - central Kentucky?s Mississippian Plateaus Region and encompasses a large portion of Lake Cumberland, one of the state?s most scenic waterways and recreational areas.  Russell County covers a land area of 253 square miles and had a 2006 estimated population of 17,114 persons.

Jamestown, located in the central portion of Russell County, serves as the county seat.  Jamestown had a 2006 estimated population of 1,724.  Jamestown is located 185 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio; 124 miles southeast of Louisville, Kentucky; and 149 miles northwest of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Russell Springs, the largest of the two cities, is located five miles north of Jamestown and had a 2006 estimated population of 2,554.

Highways - The Cumberland Parkway, US Highway 127, and Kentucky Route 80, AAA - rated (80,000 pound gross load limit) trucking highways serving Russell County.  The Cumberland Parkway provides access to Interstate 65, a major North - South corridor, 68 miles west of Jamestown.  The Cumberland Parkway and Kentucky 80 provide access to Interstate 75, a major North - South thoroughfare, 63 miles east of Jamestown.  Russell County is also served by Kentucky Route 55, which is an AA - rated (62,000 pound gross load limit) trucking highway.

Truck Service - Twelve common carrier trucking companies provide interstate and/or intrastate trucking service to Russell County.

Rail - The Norfolk Southern Corporation provides the nearest main line rail service at Somerset, 27 miles east of Russell Springs.

Air - The nearest scheduled commercial airline service is available at Bluegrass Airport, 87 miles northeast of Russell Springs in Lexington, KY.  The Russell County Airport, located two miles northwest of Jamestown, maintains a 5,000 foot runway.

The total number of Russell County residents employed in 2006 averaged 7,520. Manufacturing provides 1,861 jobs; 890 people were employed in services; 887 people were employed in trade, transportation and utilities; and public administration employed 231 people.

Kentucky Utilities Company provides electric power to Jamestown, Russell Springs, and portions of Russell County.  The major portion of the county is served by South Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation, whose source of power is East Kentucky Power.
